BYD is continuing to move quickly at the upper end of the electric vehicle market. The latest spy shots of the new BYD Great Han, with the lead image showing an approximate rendering based on those photos, reveal a large executive sedan driving with light camouflage, suggesting that the model may already be in an advanced stage of development. Its long, low and elegant silhouette makes it clear that the brand wants to compete in a more ambitious territory, where design, range and technology matter just as much as price.
The Great Han is shaping up to be the sedan counterpart to the Great Tang, the large electric SUV that BYD is expected to launch soon. Together, both models could form a kind of dual flagship within the range, aimed at strengthening BYD’s image in the premium electric vehicle market. Although the company has not yet released official specifications, early expectations suggest that the Great Han could appear in China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings in June or July, open for reservations in August and formally enter the market in September, just before the commercial season known as “Golden October”.
One of the Great Han’s main selling points will be range. Early reports point to a figure of up to 1,000 km, supported by BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and ultra-fast charging technology. If confirmed, it would even exceed the 950 km announced for the Great Tang EV, placing it among the longest-range electric sedans in the Chinese market. In a segment where buyers look for performance, long-distance comfort and shorter charging times, this could become one of its strongest commercial weapons.
In terms of design, the Great Han will adopt the new styling language of the Great family, with a distinctive front light signature, an LED strip running across the front end and vertical intakes integrated with the daytime running lights. High-end details are also expected, including two-tone paint finishes, large wheels and brake calipers colour-coordinated with the bodywork. The intention seems clear: BYD wants to move away from the image of the electric car as a purely rational product and move closer to a more emotional, technological and prestigious proposal.
The interior should also follow the direction set by the Great Tang, with a premium-focused cabin, a clean layout and a high level of technology. Available images and early information point to a very similar dashboard, a shared steering wheel design and an overall presentation intended to convey greater sophistication. In an executive sedan of this type, BYD will need to pay particular attention to rear-seat comfort, perceived quality, sound insulation and digital features, all key areas when competing with Chinese and European rivals in the upper end of the market.
Price will be another decisive factor. As a reference, the Great Tang EV was announced in China with a pre-sale price range between 250,000 and 320,000 yuan, equivalent at current exchange rates to approximately €31,700 to €40,600. However, if a model of this type were to reach Europe, its final price would obviously be higher after tariffs, transport, homologation, VAT and the margins of each individual market. Even so, if the Great Han follows a similar strategy, it could become a highly competitive alternative to more expensive premium electric sedans. With greater range, a more sophisticated image and BYD’s technological backing, the new Great Han looks set to become one of the brand’s most relevant launches as it tries to consolidate its position not only as a volume leader, but also as a serious player in the premium electric segment.
