The BYD Dolphin G DM-i arrives with an aggressive proposal for the European market: a compact plug-in hybrid with meaningful electric driving for daily use, more than 1,000 km of combined range and a price clearly below many European alternatives. In Spain, the Active version starts from €25,200 before incentives, while the Boost, Comfort and Sport trims are priced at €28,200, €29,700 and €30,700 respectively. These figures may vary slightly across other European markets, depending on taxation, local incentives and brand promotions.
With all available subsidies and promotional campaigns applied, the Active version can fall to €18,700 in Spain, a particularly striking figure for a 4.16-metre plug-in hybrid with a 425-litre boot. The higher trims would be priced from €21,376 for the Boost, €22,846 for the Comfort and €23,826 for the Sport after incentives and promotions. This places the Dolphin G DM-i in a very competitive position for buyers looking for an urban and family-friendly car, but not yet ready to rely exclusively on battery-electric driving.
The industrial side is just as important. This is not simply a BYD model adapted for Europe, but a car developed specifically for the European market. It is also expected to be manufactured at BYD’s plant in Szeged, Hungary, strengthening the company’s industrial presence on the continent. For the Chinese manufacturer, building cars in Europe could be crucial both to reduce tariff exposure and to improve brand perception against established European automakers.
Technically, the Dolphin G DM-i combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 70 kW with a 120 kW electric motor. The Active version uses a 7.42 kWh battery and offers up to 40 km of WLTP electric range, while Boost, Comfort and Sport versions use a larger 18.3 kWh battery that raises electric range to 105 km WLTP. Combined output reaches 129 kW in the Active trim and 156 kW in the higher versions, with 0 to 100 km/h completed in 8.3 seconds and claimed fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100 km.
With this launch, BYD appears to be targeting a very specific space in Europe: drivers who want to electrify their daily journeys, but still value the flexibility of a combustion engine for longer trips. The Dolphin G DM-i is not only competing on price. It also offers range, boot space, European production and a plug-in hybrid package that is rare in the B-segment. If BYD meets its autumn delivery schedule, it could become one of the brand’s most important models in Spain.
